Volunteering in Africa

Volunteers for Peace offers a wide variety of international volunteer projects in Africa including a project at the Khama Rhino Sanctuary in Botswana where volunteers can help with park maintenance or a project in Kenya where volunteers can work with the Sungu Women Group on a variety of community projects including tree planting, soil conservation, AIDS/HIV awareness and visits to local schools. For those with construction interests, the Uganda Pioneers Association is seeking volunteers to help build living quarters for volunteer health workers who come to staff a local health clinic. “The time went by quickly. We made friends, made progress and made papa (a traditional staple food). Some of my favorite memories are playing card games huddled around a pot of cooking beans, waking up and hearing the girls ask the people on kitchen duty for "breakfast in bed," trying to speak in Sesotho, going hiking and seeing the beauty of the land and running with Kizo, a fellow volunteer, up the hills of Lesotho. At the work site, I enjoyed digging and helping to create a concrete slab for the foundation. I loved the entire experience. I truly feel as if I did not just learn about Basotho culture- I participated.” Samantha Thomas ~ Lesotho - 2009
